About this Unit
Our advanced manual handling microcredential for support workers is designed specifically for people working in supported independent living centres, hospitals, in the home and residential aged care facilities.
Our advanced manual handling training for health care and support workers assists clients who are both semi-dependent and fully dependent. Manual handling knowledge and performance skills relating to client transfer from bed to chair/wheelchair, sit to stand, rolling in bed, using slide sheets and hoists are developed.
This training is competency based. To receive a Statement of Competence, participants must satisfactorily complete an assessment of knowledge and skills.
Our Health Care

This manual handling skills program provides support workers with essential knowledge and skills to safely assist a semi-dependent and fully dependent client.
Some of the topics for our advanced manual handling training for health care and support workers include:
- understanding the concepts of manual handling
- identifying manual handling tasks within the general and supportive care environment
- minimising manual handling injuries to self and others
- identifying the principles of safe lifting and moving of loads
- examining the relevant health and safety legislative requirements
- explaining the risk management process; including a risk management activity
- prompting versus assisting
- exploring the manual handling techniques for clients who are semi-dependent and fully dependent on others
- understanding the manual handling support required for a client transfer from bed to chair and bed to wheelchair
- understanding the manual handling support required for a client using walking aids
- repositioning a client using slide sheets
- applying a sling using slide sheets
- hoisting from a bed to a chair

| Delivery Mode | There will be 3 hours and 15 minutes of live online training and testing, followed by 4 hours of in-person training and testing. |
| Learning Objectives | In the face-to-face mode, you will need to show how to safely help a client move from sitting to standing, help a client move from lying down to sitting up, demonstrate how to roll a client in bed, and use safe and effective techniques for moving a dependent client with a slide sheet and a hoist. |
| Qualifications | Advanced People Manual Handling for Support Workers includes live online training and a knowledge test, as well as in-person training and assessment. |
