About this Unit

This people manual handling skills microcredential for support and health care workers is designed specifically for people working as home care workers, personal carers, nurses, aged care or disability support workers.

This people manual handling training is focused on support workers assisting clients who are both semi-dependent and dependent, and develops the manual handling knowledge and performance skills relating to client transfer from bed to chair/wheelchair and sit to stand and walking with aids.

This training is competency based. To receive a Statement of Competence, participants must satisfactorily complete an assessment of knowledge and skills.

This manual handling skills program provides support workers people with essential knowledge and skills to safely assist a person who is semi-dependent.

  • understanding the concepts of manual handling
  • identifying manual handling tasks within the general and supportive care environment
  • minimising manual handling injuries to self and others
  • identifying the principles of safe lifting and moving of loads
  • examining the relevant health and safety legislative requirements
  • explaining the risk management process; including a risk management activity
  • prompting versus assisting
  • exploring the manual handling techniques for clients who are semi-dependent and fully dependent on others
  • understanding the manual handling support required for a client transfer from bed to chair and bed to wheelchair
  • understanding the manual handling support required for a client using walking aids
Manual Handling – People Manual Handling Training Skills For Support Workers​
Delivery ModeOption 1 offers 3 hours of live online training and a knowledge test. Option 2 offers 3 hours of in-person training and assessment.
Learning ObjectivesIn Option 2, you will need to show how to help a client move from lying down to sitting up and from sitting to standing.
QualificationsOption 1: People Manual Handling for Support Workers includes live online training and a knowledge test, and you will receive a Statement of Completion. Option 2: People Manual Handling for Support Workers includes in-person training and assessment, and you will receive a Statement of Competence.
