About this Unit
This complex care training is designed specifically for support workers to develop the essential knowledge and skills required to assist participants to manage their urinary elimination needs via a catheter or external drainage device. The trainer will demonstrate the management of different types of catheters and external drainage devices and discuss potential complications. The training is competency based. To receive a Statement of Competence, participants must satisfactorily complete an assessment of knowledge and skills. This course is consistent with the NDIS High Intensity Support Skills Descriptor for Urinary Catheter Support (excluding in-out catheters).

Delivery Mode | The training options are: option 1, which offers 2 hours and 30 minutes of live online training and knowledge assessment (theory only); option 2, which provides 2 hours and 30 minutes of live online training with both knowledge and skills assessment (theory and competency assessment); and option 3, which includes 2 hours and 30 minutes of face-to-face training with both knowledge and skills assessment (theory and competency assessment). |
Learning Objectives | All delivery options cover basic anatomy and physiology of the renal system and complications related to the use of urinary catheters or drainage devices. Delivery Options 2 and 3 also include demonstrating in a simulated environment the changing of a urine catheter drainage bag and the correct technique for emptying a urine catheter drainage bag. |
Qualifications | Option 1 offers urinary catheter support training (idc and spc) with live online training and knowledge assessment, resulting in a statement of completion. Option 2 provides live online training with knowledge and skills assessment, resulting in a statement of competence. Option 3 includes face-to-face training and assessment, also resulting in a statement of competence. |
